Galungan Day
Galungan is a Balinese holiday that occurs every 210 days and lasts for 10 days. Galungan means “When the Dharma is winning.” During this holiday the Balinese God visit the Earth and leave on Kuningan. Galungan marks the beginning of the most important recurring religious ceremony that is celebrated by all Balinese. During the Galungan period the deified ancestors of the family descend to their former homes. They must be suitably entertained and welcomed, and prayers and offerings must be made for them. Those families who have ancestors that have not yet been cremated, but are still buried in the village cemetery, must make offerings at the graves.

Many of the ethnic Chinese of the island visit local Klenteng’s or Chinese temples to burn incense, paper money, and have their fortunes predicted for the new year that lays ahead.

Villa Atacaya is a secluded, riverside retreat in southwest Bali, characterised by sleek contemporary architecture, shingle roofs, an abundance of space and natural beauty, just a few minutes’ drive from one of the best golf courses in Asia. This 5-bedroom villa is complemented by sophisticated facilities, caring staff and superb service, ensuring guests have no real need to go out for top quality dining and entertainment.

The property is built into the contours of the banks of the meandering Buwit River, surrounded by nature, mature trees and two groves of giant bamboo. It is blessed with beautiful views and riverside trails.

Bordered by red brick walls, the villa shares a driveway, parking area and staff service facilities with its neighbour Villa Iskandar. The two villas can be rented at the same time thereby offering larger groups of guests a 9-bedroom renting option.

ABOUT

The splendid Villa Atacaya comprises five air-conditioned bedrooms, a 15-metre swimming pool, a grand living and dining room, a fully-equipped kitchen, an air-conditioned multipurpose room, and an open-air living area and alfresco dining within a central courtyard. A yoga deck and a relaxation bale rest upon a lower level beside the river. The spectacular architectural design integrates natural features including a pond fed by a holy spring and a creek that flows into the river. Sleek structures, ironwood shingle roofs and indigenous stone finishes reflect the ambience of the location and the purity of the gorgeous surroundings. Guests will be lulled by the perpetual rush of the river and the sound of birdsong. This is a nature lovers’ paradise and kingfishers are a common sight.

LIVING & DINING ROOM

The villa is entered on the upper floor level via stepping stones over an entrance pond complete with water spouts, four frangipani trees and a vertical rock garden filled with orchids and tree ferns. This stunning feature creates a cross flow of air, which cools the house. Here, a grand dining room, distinguished by a soaring roof and a terrazzo floor, is furnished with a solid wood dining table for 12, lit by a wide hanging lantern and completed with a set of woven bamboo chairs. The room is open on three sides, and cooled by ceiling fans and cross breezes with a vista of the river valley. At one end is a sitting area furnished with upholstered chairs and a coffee table, and guarded by a reclining Buddha, while the one white wall in the room is adorned with a large and colourful painting.  A series of wall speakers ensure that the villa is wired for sound.

KITCHEN

Conveniently located next to the dining room, the self-contained kitchen is outfitted in ‘Formatop’ countertops and fully equipped with an oven, a five-burner gas hob and everything else that the chef needs to prepare delicious meals for the guests.

OPEN LIVING

A set of stairs leads from the dining room down to an open-air living room situated beside the vertical garden, a waterfall and a large Buddha statue at the edge of the central courtyard. This sitting space is furnished with an L-shaped cushioned sofa and a coffee table. It is flanked at one end by a bar with a palimanan stone façade and a timber countertop. In front of the sitting area, and accessed by folding glass doors, is a cosy multipurpose room equipped with air-conditioning, a 55-inch flatscreen TV, Blu-ray disc player and multiple speakers. The doors can be fully opened to extend the room into the open air living space, enabling larger groups to enjoy movies from the outdoor space, complete with surround sound.

OUTDOOR AREAS & SWIMMING POOL

The sunny central courtyard has as its focus a square patch of flat lawn planted with two fragrant frangipani trees and three tall fan palms. A striking feature here is the ‘dancing flames’ – a gas-driven firebowl filled with water; as the gas bubbles up from below the flames jump around creating mesmerising shadows at night. There is an open-air dining area on the terrace with four glass-topped tables that can be arranged separately or pushed together to accommodate 12 for dinner on white metal chairs. Guests will be watched over by a bronze statue of Dewi Sri, the goddess of the rice harvest. On one side of the courtyard is the Holy Pond and water temple. This is the site of a holy spring that has been incorporated into the design. The spring bubbles up through a stone fountain surrounded by a rockery in which the rocks are embellished with carvings of faces, monkeys and geckoes. Natural stepping stones appear to float upon the surface of the pond, which is filled with lotus flowers and fish. The 15 x 5 metre infinity edge pool appears to overflow into the river; it is lined with blue Java stone and bordered by a sundeck, furnished with six sunbeds and two umbrellas. Finally, a spiral staircase fashioned in recycled ironwood and cast iron winds down to a riverside yoga deck with a timber floor furnished with a double sunbed and sheltered by a rustic bamboo-pole roof draped in tumbling thunbergia and birds-nest ferns. Also on this lowest level, on the opposite side of the yoga deck, is a bale relaxation pavilion overlooking the fast flowing river.

BEDROOMS

There are five stylish bedrooms at Villa Atacaya, four of which are accessed from the central courtyard. All are equipped with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, satellite channel TVs and DVD players, and all have views of the river or the Holy Pond.

Bedroom no 1 is positioned on the ground floor of the main house and looks out over the holy pond with glass doors on two sides. This spacious room is themed in dark red and furnished with a built-in queen-size bed, built-in wardrobes and a desk. The vast ensuite bathroom features Indian slate walls and a terrazzo floor. It is fitted with a walk-in rainshower with the additional option of a handheld shower, twin washbasins carved out of natural river rock, two enormous mirrors, more wardrobes and a toilet within a cubicle.

Bedrooms 2 and 3 are situated in a single-storey pavilion on one side of the courtyard. Bedroom no 2 overlooks the Holy Pond and presents a blue theme.  Furnished with a queen-size bed and built-in wardrobes, it is adjoined by a small bathroom with a walk-in rainshower with a handheld option, a toilet, a single washbasin and a dressing area. ABOUT

Covering three levels, the graceful Villa Iskandar comprises four air-conditioned bedrooms, a large, freeform swimming pool and pool deck, an open-sided living room complete with a small pantry, a dining room offering the choice of semi-open-air dining or air-conditioned comfort, and a separate kitchen. There is also an alfresco dining area upon the pool deck and a choice of balconies and decks for relaxing. Guests at Villa Iskandar will be serenaded by the song of the river and the sounds of nature. Here, sightings of iridescent blue kingfishers, monitor lizards and other wildlife are commonplace.

LIVING ROOM

Guests will enter the villa on the upper floor, where a traditional Balinese gong announces arrivals and a fretwork wooden screen heralds the way into the living room. This charming room is open on two sides with a balcony at the front overlooking the swimming pool with views of the sparkling river beyond. A comfy segmented sofa scattered with Chinese silk cushions, a coffee table, a card table and a lamp, makes this a delightful space for watching movies on the 48-inch satellite channel TV and DVD player. PANTRY & PERGOLA

Next to the living room is a small pantry, where light lunches and snacks can be prepared or kept warm on a two-burner hob. On the far side of the pantry is an open-air pergola bordered by red brick walls and a lotus pond with a bubbling urn in the centre. Here, a table rests on the wooden deck, which appears to float upon the pond.

DINING ROOM

An elegant dining room with a wooden floor is situated on the middle level and furnished with a table for ten offset by some beautiful Chinese cabinets. Decorated with Chinese artefacts and paintings, this formal room is air-conditioned but it is also fitted with a fan and folding glass doors that open to the pool deck, thus offering a more casual, semi-open air dining experience.

KITCHEN

Adjacent to the dining room, the self-contained kitchen is fitted with dark wood cabinets and a terrazzo worktop. It is fully equipped with an oven, a five-burner gas hob, and everything else that the chef needs to prepare delicious meals for the guests.

OUTDOOR AREA & SWIMMING POOL

A palimanan stone staircase leads from the upper level down to the middle level, which is the social hub of the property, presenting a splendid outdoor area dominated by a large and enticing, freeform swimming pool. Shaded by frangipani trees and tall fan palms, the wide pool deck is fashioned from rustic recycled timbers and furnished with sunloungers and an alfresco dining table for ten. A firebowl at the edge of the pool creates a romantic ambience at night. A guest shower room is conveniently located on this level.

BEDROOMS

There are four classy bedrooms at Villa Iskandar. All are equipped with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, satellite channel TVs and DVD players. All have warm wooden floors and creamy-white palimanan stone partition walls behind the beds, adorned with classic Chinese paintings.

The master bedroom is on the upper floor. Furnished with a queen-sized bed, it is characterised by a vaulted roof and a balcony terrace on two sides, accessed by two sets of glass doors.
